Midge
The midge pattern is one of the easiest to tie up. The time you
spend making one of these pays off huge dividends. Fact is
that for clear water trout, these things are deadly, and the best
part is that there is no specialty materials needed, all you need
is
- black thread
- silver flashabou
- size 16 or 18 hooks
- peacock hurl
To start off, tie black thread around the hook to the end of the
shank.
Next, tie in the silver flashabou at the back and work the black
thread up about 2/3 the way of the hook shank making sure
that the thread is uniform in thickness.
Now, take the silver flash and work it forward to make the body
look segmented
At this point, tie in the peacock hurl and then move the black
thread forward evening out the body or even making this
slightly thicker than the body portion of the midge.
Tie off the peacock hurl and whip finish and you are done. I
like to add a little epoxy to the fly just because it will most
likely take a beating through its useful life. This fly is a great
starter for new tiers, but if you have any questions, feel free to
