One cup of steaming coffee and a cold jelly donut and I close the tailgate to head
towards the stream. The yarn strike indicator bounces with every step I take like the
caddis to come months from now. Taking out the garbage
this time of year begrudges
you of warmer times
. It is now the small breaks from the indoors for chores that
become
something you hate to do and everything you do outside is done in a manner
where your shoulders are permanently shrugged. The month is December and I could
not think of a better way to spend my time then wading in the water
knee deep nymph
fishing with anticipation of the next trout to bite.

Thermal pants and shirt, along with a long sleeve tee shirt, fleece pants, and pullover
are the layers of the day topped with my wading jacket. Heavy socks, fleece
fingerless gloves and a wool hat armor me further against the elements. The winter
sun shines, but does not heat my face, it only helps reveal the tails moving in rhythm
with the swirling currents of the river.

The slim summer look of the river has filled in and the cold water breathes new life
below while above is stark.
With each fish caught it is then released into the oxygen
rich water to swim away slightly tired but much smarter for the next time we meet.
The cold weather has taken over, the leaves scatter over the ground and the trees are
now asleep until spring. It is a quiet time on the river and one which I treasure every
year.
